Abstract

To investigate what kinds of foods mothers eat to increase breastmilk production,
behaviors for increasing breastmilk production and lactation period, this descriptive study
was conducted from September 1 in 1998 to December 28 in the same year.
The subjects were 304 breastfeeding mothers who visited at 2 pediatric clinic located in
Tmetropolitan city and CH Gun.
The instrument is consisted of demographic characteristics related to subject s and their
babies , food types which subjects had taken to increase the br eastmilk production and the behavior of increasing the breastmilk production . T he reliability of the instrument for the behavior of increasing the breastmilk production was Cronbach¡¯s ¥á=0.83.
The data was analyzed with SAS program.
The r esults were summarized as follows :
1) The food taken most fr equently to increase the breastmilk production was Gom- Guk.
And the Subject s have taken 1.6 kinds of food to increase the breastmilk production.
2) The subjects did 7.56 kinds of behavior of increasing the breastmilk production.
2) Mean lactation period of the subjects was 9.7 weeks.
3) The subjects started to eat foods from 7.8th postpartum days for 2 weeks influenced
by the person helped postpartum care.
4) Pearson correlation coefficient between lactation period and the number of taken food
was significant (r=0.133, P=0.021).
Pearson correlation coefficient between lactation period and the behavior of increasing
the breastmilk production was significant (r=0.435, P=0.000).
